Last Wednesday, a Guide of measures to reduce wildlife damage to crops, urban areas, and infrastructure was presented. The document was promoted by Barcelona Provincial Council, in collaboration with the Government of Catalonia’s Department of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food, and was developed with technical assistance provided by Minuartia. The Guide contains descriptive files on the most efficient measures to avoid wildlife damage, as well as technical details and useful considerations for implementation of the measures. It focuses on the four most conflictive ungulates: wild boar (Sus scrofa), roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), fallow deer (Dama dama) and red deer (Cervus elaphus) and presents various measures depending on the requirements of each situation, the scope of application, the target species, and the timescale. The aim is to provide a useful tool for managers, especially town halls that have problems of this type in their municipalities, and for managers of protected natural areas, other entities, and individuals.
The next step will be to create a website where the guide can be consulted interactively, which will be updated frequently as new features appear or new needs are detected after feedback from users.
