Ungulate census pilot project using phototrapping in Montseny Natural Park

Barcelona Provincial Council

A pilot project was carried out using random encounter model (REM) methodology based on phototrapping to obtain accurate ungulate density estimates. During the winter months of 2018 and 2019, the test was carried out and methodological modifications were applied to improve the margins of error and the accuracy of estimates. Wild boar density results were compared with the density obtained from area hunting data, to corroborate the method. This study is part of the international project ENETWILD, carried out in collaboration with the Research Institute of Hunting Resources (IREC-CSIC) team, who have standardized the methodology and are conducting trials in various areas of Europe.
