African Swine Fever (ASF) is a haemorrhagic viral disease affecting wild boar and domestic pigs. There are currently no effective vaccines or treatments, and the disease has a high mortality rate. The measures taken to contain the outbreak declared in Catalonia in November 2025, as well as the protocols applied in other affected European countries, were the subject of the lecture given by the MINUARTIA team at the Swine Conference, organised jointly by the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) and the Association of Swine Veterinarians of Catalonia (AVPC), held in Sabadell from 28 to 30 January.
One of the key topics was the management of ASF outbreaks, which, since their re-emergence in Europe in 2007 – specifically in Georgia – have spread unchecked and currently affect 14 countries in the European Union (EU), including Spain. In the current context, and bearing in mind that since November 2025 we have been facing the challenge of containing the ASF outbreak declared in Cerdanyola (Barcelona), wild boar have become a key factor in the epidemiology of this disease. Now more than ever, controlling and managing wild boar populations is a shared challenge for animal health professionals, experts in ecology and wild boar management, and other stakeholders.
