SUEZ Spain has received the European Environment Award from the European Commission in the category ‘Enterprise and Biodiversity’.<\/p>\n
The award recognizes SUEZ Spain\u2019s strategy to promote biodiversity in water cycle companies through progressive transformation of facilities (wastewater treatment plants, drinking water treatment plants, and others) to green infrastructure.<\/p>\n
The ‘Operational guide for the conservation of biodiversity in the integral water cycle’ is one of the cornerstones on which the strategy is based. It was compiled by the Sustainable Development team and drafted with the technical assistance of MINUARTIA, and the collaboration of plant employees.<\/p>\n
Among the actions that are carried out in the facilities are restoration of habitats such as wetlands, the application of nature-based solutions to drainage, the reduction of pesticides and fertilizers in gardening, the control of invasive species, and the design of green spaces that shelter wildlife and contribute to pest control. The Operational Guide also highlights the target of drawing up plans for biodiversity initiatives in 2021 for plants located in protected areas, and the BiObserva corporate volunteer programme, which facilitates the involvement of workers and collaboration with various naturalist organizations, to register species of fauna in the facilities.<\/p>\n
An increasing number of companies are opting to invest in green infrastructure, favouring services provided by ecosystems, and their notable benefits for people.
